The 15 Minute Face

By Nichelle L. Early, Executive Editor
To a woman, especially a woman participating in ministry, time is always of the essence. From balancing family, church activities, prayer and study, and for some, full time jobs, it becomes challenging to consistently maintain lengthy daily beauty regimens. However, your face is one of your greatest assets. As a preaching woman, people focus on your face for extended periods of time while you are ministering. Therefore, it is imperative that you put your "best face" forward by having your face appear lively, interesting, and polished.

Now, every woman in ministry does not ascribe to wearing makeup, and that is perfectly acceptable. What we would recommend for you is to be sure that you maintain a consistent cleansing regimen in order for your skin to appear clear and healthy, exhibiting a natural glow. Also, adding a clear lip gloss accentuates your smile and enhances your natural beauty.

For those of you who do prefer to apply makeup to your face, we want to provide you with some time wise tips that will help you maximize your already beautiful YOU in 15 minutes or less!

What You Should Do?

Foundation: With the full range of cosmetics on the market today, there are more than 50 shades between the lightest and deepest of skin complexions.  Therefore, before purchasing always be sure to test your foundation on your cheek or nose, especially when buying the more expensive lines. The all-in-one foundation formula that provides great coverage is the combination liquid/powder duo. You can purchase this formula of foundation pretty much at every price level.  As an addendum, foundations work best when applied to a clean face. So here are some tips to help you apply your foundation during your 15 Minute Face routine:

(Time allotted: 5 minutes)

  • Apply your foundation with fingers in order to achieve a "natural" look.  The warmth from your fingers helps spread your foundation quickly and evenly.
  • Start with your T-Zone, particularly under the eyes
  • Be sure to blend all over your entire face.  Don't leave out your lips, as the foundation will allow your lipstick to last longer. Apply less amounts of foundation over your "best" areas and blot a little heavier over the trouble spots.  Once applied, use a good foundation brush, with natural hairs for best results, to sweep over your foundation for an even finish.

Eyebrows: Many women sometimes overlook their eyebrows; however, they play a significant part in helping you beautify your face. Eyebrows give the impression of a framed face and when properly arched, accentuate a fresh polished look.  The purpose of eyebrows is to prevent moisture and sweat from rolling into the eyes. So, it is imperative not to over pluck or arch your eyebrows while intending to keep them groomed. Here are some tips to help with your eyebrows while making up your face in 15 minutes:

(Time allotted: 3 minutes)

  • Comb your eyebrows down, to flick away any foundation powder that my have gotten in the brow, with an old toothbrush or lash comb.
  • Fill them in lightly with a soft pencil; avoid harsh colors, like Jet black, to keep from over dramatizing the brow.

  • Lightly spray your tooth brush with a mist of hair spray or spritz and brush the brow back into place by following the natural direction of your brows.

Eyes: Eyes are said to be the "window to the soul."  Therefore, it is important that your eyes appear comforting and not too dramatic, as ministry requires direct eye contact.  These tips should help you as you apply your makeup within 15 minutes.

(Time allotted: 5 minutes)

  • Apply a neutral toned eye-shadow over the entire eye lid. Begin at the inner corner and stroke slightly to the outer edge of the eye lid. Then apply a medium colored shade on the base of the eye lid. Use your fingertips to lightly blend the shadows together over the lid to minimize line distinctions.
  • Using press or blotting powder, lightly dust lashes and apply mascara in a downward scrubbing motion.
  • Apply a thin line of lineralong the base of your lashes on the top and bottom. Black or browns liners tend to work well for dark complexions, and light blues for very fair complexions.

Lips: Coupled with the eyes, the lips are also a focal point for parishioners as they are listening to you minister.  By applying it last, lipstick adds that final touch to any makeup application.  Here are some tips to help you apply your lipstick and conclude your 15 Minute Face!

(Time allotted: 2 minutes)

  • Dab a bit of petroleum jelly or lip balm to give you lips a little moisture.
  • Draw a thin line along the edge of your lips with a lip liner whose color is a neutral color or one shade darker than your chosen lipstick. Start at the center of the upper lip and work outward. Hug the very outer edges to make thin lips appear fuller, and line well within the edges to downplay excessively full lips.
  • Coat lips with a moderate amount of lipstick using a lipstick brush.  Take a napkin and blot away excessive lipstick to balance the color and texture.

Ladies, that's it.  You can quickly apply your make up and enhance your God-given beauty so that you emerge confident and ready for any ministry occasion with your 15 Minute Face!
