Evangelist Darlene Laney, artist, author, counselor, preacher, teacher, workshop presenter are but a few of the words used to describe what she does; however, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, mentor, and student are who she is.
Evangelist Laney has been writing and drawing for as long as she can remember; in fact she can remember making up stories and illustrations as a child. As an avid reader, it was no surprise to her family that she earned the "Book Worm" award for reading the most books of any other students, not only in her grade, but her entire school. Everyone knew that if she was missing, more than likely she could be found in her favorite spot curled up with a book. This would prove to be a major part of the foundation of her ministry.
"Life for me ain't been no crystal staircase," a line from one of Maya Angelou's poems, accurately sums up the twists and turns her life took before being called to ministry. Dreams and aspirations for a fairytale future were buried under the reality of "trying to make-it," while being divorced, with only a high school diploma, two children, and a job with a salary that once financed the ancillary things of life, but is now required to cover the expenses of a single parent household. At that time, "making do" and "getting by" were all she knew to do, as she was comforted by the companionship of her journals which were full of entries chronicling her struggles and heart's desires. And although this was a very trying time for Evangelist Laney, God in His infinite wisdom and grace allowed these circumstances to bring about a mind change and therefore a change of direction and rededication of her life to Christ.
Within six months of rededicating her life to the Lord, Evangelist Laney's life did a 180 degree turn. From a mind change all the way to a job change and everything in between, God proved Himself mighty in her life. God began to open doors of opportunity, and put her in place for promotion, and while bringing her before people of influence for His glory. All of these things served to cause her to walk in the purpose of God for her life---a delightsome land. Through all of the trials and testing, God truly gave her a testimony.
Today, Evangelist Laney is a happily married woman; a grandmother of three beautiful grandchildren; a college graduate having earned a B.A. in Business and an M.A. in Counseling-Education; and a retired counselor from the CSU system. God has blessed her to be in full-time ministry, using those same gifts she had as a child, that of being an artist, writer, and speaker.
Truly, "It is the Lord's doing and it is marvelous in our sight!"
